Thrifted Sweater Upcycling

Today, I am restyling a bunch of old, thrifted sweaters. By using French seams I have found that you can do almost anything to chunky knits without having to worry about them unravelling. First, sew right sides together, trim 1/4" from the seam, turn, sew again to enclose your first seam with wrong sides together.

Take in a big, frumpy sweater and add a ruffle for a fun sweater dress, or turn an unsused sweater into an embellished mini skirt in just minutes!

Unused bits and pieces can be thrown into your washing machine at the hottest water setting and dried to create felt which can be used to create appliques, necklaces, brooch pins... you name it! Now that's recycling!

  1. Love it, now there is no excuse for frumpy sweaters this winter!

  2. Thanks Molly! I was inspired by your "dress a day" post. So much faster to make a wardrobe by restyling... I might be able to make a dress a day at this rate!

  3. You've done awesome stuff with the sweaters, I didn't know you could create felt that way, mentally filing that tip. Marissa only has 3 weeks left to go, maybe you could pick up the mantle? I did wonder if there will a price surge in thrift shop nasties since she became so well known?! Look forward to seeing what you upcycle next :-)
